Cocktails? You have cocktails at nine in the morning, darling.

Should be off to Goldstream tonight after work for some rest and relaxation. Two nights in the cheap showiness of nature. I look forward to cutting myself off from most of the world and just being.

Yesterday: Watched The Ghost in the Shell by myself, which was a strange but pleasing experience, even if the ending felt more like the pilot to a new series than a film. Tortellini for breakfast. Two hours at Second Story, writing, with useless trips out to look at clothes stores with Joy. One bottle of Boone's Sangria to myself at the Junkie Park with Joy and Matt. Sipped from A&W cups. We talked with great pretension about the universe and reincarnation, masturbated our brains until intellectual orgasm, and then headed off. Stopped at Steamer's Pub to pee -- came face to face with Matt's image on a poster for one of his bands, above the urinal -- then picked up beer and groceries to make a dinner. It was really good - spaghetti with cream of mushroom soup as a sauce, plus fried tofu and steamed broccoli. Drank beer. Watched eight episodes of Sex in the City and critiqued the whole experience. Talked to Michael on the phone. Wandered home at midnight to get sleep so that I could get up this morning and apply at Well's Books, because someone said they were hiring.

Only they weren't, so I uselessly dropped off a resume and came to Michael's house. I don't know -- maybe the woman didn't like my look immediately, or it's all done through nepotism anyway. Disheartening.

Man, it looks like rain.

Paton:

Well dear the first time I read this thing and I find out such horrible news. Sorry for all the trouble. Nepotism in terms of being lesbian I suppose. They prefer women. Whatch ya gonna do hey? Phone sometime and teach me a thing or two...
Now, time for my oil massage and a stiff martini

No worries, not your fault. How are you feeling? I hear you were worse than I was after the party the other night. My puke was blue and green!

I may get lynched for this, but Ghost in the Shell is a terrible movie. I've given it several chances and it always fails to even remotely captivate me. It's based on a 7 volume manga which, when condensed into an hour and 30 minutes or so, fails to make any sense whatsoever. (Akira at least used 2 plus hours to give you some sense of what was going on.) They decided instead to ride the movie on it's 'state of the art' special effects, which equals out to the nifty cloaked look first pioneered for the Predator films about a decade previous. A second movie is either on its way or already out (not sure on that one . . .) and I'm really not that excited about it. (I think the first Ghost in the Shell is Mamoru Oshii film . . . creator of Angel's Egg . . . which is another movie that ends with me realizing I'll never have that time back to use again . . .)

My I'm opinionated eh? -=grin=-

Update: "Ghost in the Shell: Innocence" is being realeased over here on September 17th.

Joy:

I hope your camping goes well. It's raining here. And cold. And I want a martini.

You're all lushes!!!

My puke was blue. But don't tell anyone!

Mattesque:

Ghost in the Shell: Innocence just played in the official competition at the Cannes Film Festival last week, so it must have something going for it. Hopefully not the same annoying vocal score as the first one.

The first one had some interesting ideas - like the idea of what the Puppet Master A.I. and the cyborg detective woman would become by merging their consciousnesses together - essentially procreating. It just didn't feel like it went anywhere other than that. It didn't give us time to ruminate on anything.

Which is the exact problem. The manga at least went somewhere where this was too short to barely scratch the surface. Stupid movie.

I feel asleep during "Ghost in the Shell." I've never been a fan of manga or anime, so it wasn't too much of a surprise.

one should never say "I don't like anime" as that's like saying "I don't like movies." It's a medium as opposed to a genre and is as diverse as the rest of film.

Just havent found you the right movie yet ;o)

ben:

I'm trying to think if there's any anime I've liked. "Spirited Away" was good. Liked pieces of the Animatrix (even if the original Human/Machine war sequence gave me NIGHTMARES). I can't remember, it may have been with Krista or someone back in PG, but I watched a bunch of "The Dirty Pair" - the height of ridiculous bad taste heroines in dangerous/risque situations - and quite liked it. But that was kitsch.

"Princess Mononoke" is by far my favourite movie ever, anime or not. But yeah...whoe crazy range of stuff out there.
