Look at the puppy!

LA Weekly: TV: Pass the Paddles: Man's Best Friend

Simulated puppy, that is. Its a hand held video game simulation of a puppy.

And its so damn cute!

test post

So there should be some math here somewhere. Where the heck did I put it? Oh right: Display equations: \[ h=\sin(2 \pi \theta) \] should look like $h=\sin(2 \pi \theta)$, and that should be like h=sin(2*pi*theta), but in math, not web stuff.

I would like to live in Holland some day.

And thus quoth the internets:

Beautiful: Cum & Swallow

Leave it to the Dutch. With sex and drugs they've always been the first to rise the challenge. Continuing their visionary tradition, Hollanders have now taken reality shows boldly to where no man has gone before . It's called "Spuiten & Slikken", or to the non-nederlanderphones amongst you "Cum & Swallow.

Does 6 always equal six?

Yes. No. Both, and neither. Depends on what you mean by number, which is a fundamental question in mathematics. The foundations of mathematics are fraught with mystery, paradox, and unanswered questions. Take the Peano's Axioms for example.
$0$ is a number.
Everything has to start somewhere. Peano didn't explicitlly define what it meant to be a number, he chose something and made it a number
if $a$ is a number, so is its successor $a+1$
$0$ is a number, therefore $0+1=1$ is a number. Therefore $1+1=2$ is a number... The process repeats. Now we have a list of numbers. If you're given an object and asked if it is a number, you can work backward to see if it is a number.
If the successors of two numbers are equal, the the numbers are equal
When are two things equal? When are they different? This question is surprisingly difficult to answer. In Peano's system, the successor of $2$ is $1$, and the successor of $3$ is $2$, so $3 \ne 2$.
If a set $S$ contains $0$, and contains the successor of every it contains, then it contains every number.
This is a inductively defined set. Zero is in $S$, so $1$ is in $S$, and so is $2$...
In the Peano system, all equal numbers are equal: six is always equal to $6$. All of arithmetic can be built from these five rules, but there is a problem. There are statements about numbers which are true, but cannot be proven using the rules above. Mathematicians don't like that. As I mentioned before, in A Quick And Dirty History of Nothing, there are two kinds of numbers, ordinals and cardinals. There is the sixth day of the week, and the sixth month of the year. They are different things, but they have a commonality: there are five things before them. They are different things, but they have the same ordinal number (sixth). Most people have ten fingers and ten toes. Fingers aren't the same as toes, but the number of fingers is equal to the number of toes. There is only one cardinal number called ten. Any mention of ten is referring to the same concept, $10$. The cardinal number of fingers (or toes, or bowling pins) is ten.

Is it a full moon? I do believe it is, just from all the weirdo's out there.

A list! A list is in order.
  • And lo they did lay down in the valley of the shadow of the mountain, and there they did sup
Damn. Wrong list.
  1. I was offered a job today. It pays less, but I'd have an office. I've since refused. (side note: I also refused this job last year).
  2. While walking home today, some guy in a hoody offered me a shot of rum from a paper bag. I refused.
  3. Some other guy was committing a solo act of ultimate pleasure in the bathroom at the university. Stress relief is stress relief, but that's disgusting.
  4. I think I'm prepared for the final tomorrow. I've considered posting equations to scare you, but I've refused.
  5. I find the dahl that I made weak. I usually don't go for spices.
  6. My mother has a new found appreciation for kickboxing movies! I refused to watch one with her this evening.
  7. My boyfriend is drinking mulled wine without me. I was not given the opportunity to refuse; probably for the best, as I wouldn't have even though I need to study.
Ok. Nothing earth shattering or anything, but still! Fine fine, one equation to give you nightmares: \[ \iiint_V \bigtriangledown \cdot \mathbf{F} \mathrm{d}V = \iint_{\partial V} \mathbf{F} \cdot \mathrm{d}\mathbf{A} \]

Done and Done!

I'm done!

Wrote the final, answered almost all the questions, and AND *AND* *AND* figured out how to do a change of variables for the first time. Woot.

Piers

Taken in April of this in Victoria's Inner Harbour, slightly cropped and coloured. Why has it taken me this long to post these?

Seven, not four, SEVEN

IMG_2669-1.jpg

There's construction in the neighbour hood. I don't mind construction. I can deal with construction. In a year, two new condo-complexes will be complete, and I'll be within walking distance of a Home Despot. That's cool, more taxes in the neighbourhood, maybe even more municipal services in the area.

BUT... (and you just knew there was a but coming)... The latest one, condo-complex #3 will be seven stories tall. See that crane there? Big Ugly Condo (BUC) will be taller. I don't like this. There isn't a building within ten miles that is more than four stories tall. This one will be seven. SEVEN!

I hate it already. Someone get me my walking stick, I'm going to go hit the crane to show my disgust and maybe I'll yell "get out of my neighbourhood you whippersnappersBig Ugly Condo!"

Damn Cold Weather

IMG_1559.jpg

I'm not all that good with cold weather, and this photo (from April, 2005) reminds me of warmer weather.

Cold and Raining Today

IMG_1664.jpg

Magnolia tree blossom, taken in the spring time.

I've grown tired of Lady Winter, with the cold sunny days or the warm rainy days. I want warm, sunny days, but I'll probably get cold rainy days.

Backlit Bamboo

IMG_2672.jpg

Gah. Enough pink. Lets have some actual wintery warmth. Bamboo in silouette, shot on Dean Road last week. as I was walking home from the mall. Heavily photoshopped for drama and flair.

Broken Reeds at Sunset

IMG_1737.jpg

Another photoshopped image. There was really only a hint of sunset in the water, but some colour manipulation really brought out the red/pink and purple in the sky. Shot during the summer, at Elk lake with a bunch of negativespace.net bloggers. Almost called "daisy chain."

Thunder and lightning scare me to the point of panic attacks, if I don't control myself, hence the need for something serene and calm to consider today.

Note to self: Did I already post this one?

The Red Leaves of Fall

Some red for the christmas season, taken in the last week of September, I think.

"...Our nation's children are not to be trusted..." -- v.p. dick

The NSA today denied investigating the connection between American children and Claus, also known as Father Christmas.

The National Security Agency has already admitted to spying on Americans without official warrants, as authorized by the President. It had been assumed that only American adults were the targets of the illegal wiretapping.

A source has leaked that, as of today, the Post Office will be turning over every letter to Claus to be read, indexed, and searched. Children with suspected ties to the man in the red suit will be investigated, interviewed, and possibly detained without dinner.

Parents will not be contacted prior to the children, nor will they be allowed any contact with the suspects.

"Investigating our nation's children for potential terrorist ties is in our children's best interest," said the Vice President yesterday. "Our nation's children are not to be trusted, given the obvious contact they have with the traitor Claus."

"I'm glad I that my family doesn't celebrate the Christian holidays, my children have been kept safe," said Mohamad Azim, a resident of New York. Azim, an immigrant from North Africa, credited his family's faith in Islam.

Matt Groening has faith in the relaunch of Futurama, writes Michael Idato.

Nearly four years after it was cancelled, the popularity of Futurama on DVD could breathe life back into the animated television series. On the subject of a rumoured resurrection, creator Matt Groening, best known for his other animated hit, The Simpsons, says, intriguingly: "You never know."

More fun than the yule log

0032-03.jpg

Taken at Island View Beach, way back about two or three years ago. We were there for Natasha's birthday and lit a small camp fire (sans permit! such rebels).

Scanned from film, and photoshopped to remove some dust, finger prints, and grain. I really don't like my scanner any more. It was a cheapy-bleapy, and had far too much noise in the dark areas. If I stay with film for the good stuff, I'm going to have to invest in a better scanner, something that can handle negatives and slides.
